Bolsonaro has been arrested after authorities found he posed a definite escape threat while under home confinement.

The former head of state was found guilty of planning a government overthrow in September and sentenced more than 27 years in incarceration, but he remained under home detention pending court reviews.

High Court Judge the presiding justice said the decision to arrest the 70-year-old politician was a preventative measure after recent developments emerged.

This included seeking to disable his ankle monitor and a summons to a demonstration that could enable a possible escape.

Legal Document Reveals Escape Risks

In a document approving the arrest, the judge said information from the facility tracking his home detention suggested the one-time head of state's "intention to break the electronic ankle bracelet to guarantee victory in his flight.

This, it said, would be made easier by the confusion caused by the protest called by his child.

His offspring, Flávio Bolsonaro, who serves as a legislator, called for a assembly of his supporters near the former president's residence to take place on Saturday night.

Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on social media on the previous day: Do you plan to struggle for your country, or watch it all from your smartphone there on your settee? I call on you to battle with us."

Diplomatic Refuge Fears

Part of the magistrate's determination was the possibility of Bolsonaro's "relocation to embassies near the home, considering that the inquiries revealed a history of planning to seek refuge through a diplomatic representation", a declaration said.

The former president's legal troubles have provoked anger from fellow conservative nationalist United States President Trump, causing him to enact a 50% tariff on goods coming from Brazil.

Bolsonaro is being kept in a national police facility in Brasilia and will undergo a imprisonment assessment on the next day.

Recent Legal Requests

It was only on Friday that the ex-leader's attorneys asked the High Court to permit him to serve his whole jail sentence under home confinement, with electronic monitoring.

They also petitioned that he be allowed to depart his residence for medical care, saying he required frequent medical attention for lung conditions and other health problems.

Details of Guilty Verdict

He was found guilty of orchestrating a conspiracy aimed at maintaining his control after he failed to win the national vote to his left-wing rival, Lula.

High Court judges said that he had knowledge of a plot which included plans to assassinate his opponent and his VP candidate, Alckmin, and to arrest and execute the presiding judge - the Supreme Court justice who has been presiding over his judicial proceedings.

The conspiracy was stopped because it didn't receive the endorsement of the armed forces officials. Lula was sworn in without problem on January 1st, 2023.

But a week later, on January 8th, thousands of his followers stormed and vandalised official structures in the federal district, the capital city.

The law enforcement stepped in and around approximately 1,500 persons were arrested.

The magistrates found that the protesters had been encouraged by Bolsonaro whose plan, they said, was for the Brazilian military to intervene, bring back stability and return him to office.
