The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unjustified” travel bans issued by the US against five Europeans working on fighting digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official has said.
European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans targeted individuals who have been central to campaigns to introduce legislation governing American tech companies.
“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce American platforms to punish US perspectives they oppose,” wrote a senior US official online. “This government will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in criticizing the decision.
The restrictions were imposed this week against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four activists fighting false information, including Germany and the United Kingdom.
